Bybit KYC verification: what to expect

Updated 2026-08-28

Verification is the step people postpone and then regret postponing. It is also the step where support tickets pile up, almost always for reasons that were avoidable at the moment of upload.

Why it exists

Regulated financial businesses are legally required to identify their customers. The rules go by different names in different places — anti-money-laundering, counter-terrorist financing, know your customer — and they are obligations on the company, enforced by regulators, with real consequences for failure. This is not a policy an exchange chose and could waive for you if you asked nicely.

It also has a second function that benefits you directly: it is what makes account recovery possible. An anonymous account cannot be returned to its owner, because nobody can prove who the owner is.

What is asked for

Expect three things.

A government-issued identity document — passport, national identity card or driving licence, depending on what the platform accepts in your country. It must be valid, not expired, and photographed in full.

A liveness check — a selfie or a short video, sometimes with instructions to turn your head or follow a prompt. This proves the document belongs to the person holding it, and it is why a photo of a photo fails.

Proof of address, often — a utility bill, bank statement or official letter, usually required to be recent. Requirements vary by market and by the level of access you are requesting.

Higher tiers, larger volumes and certain products can trigger additional questions, including where your funds came from. That is normal for regulated finance and not an accusation.

The reasons submissions get rejected

Almost every rejection falls into one of five buckets, and all five are preventable.

Image quality. Glare from a flash across the document, a cropped corner, a shadow over the machine readable line, motion blur. Photograph the document flat on a plain surface in even daylight, with all four corners inside the frame, no flash.

Name mismatch. The account name must match the document exactly. Missing middle names, transliteration differences, married versus maiden names and reversed name order all cause failures. Fix the account name before submitting, not after.

Expired documents. Obvious, and still common.

Address proof problems. Too old, a different address than the one entered, a name that does not match, or a document type the platform does not accept. Read what is accepted before uploading something plausible-looking.

Editing. Any file that shows signs of alteration will be refused, including innocent cropping and "enhancement" in a photo app. Submit the original camera file.

While it is pending

Do not submit the same documents repeatedly. Duplicate submissions frequently push a case back into the queue rather than forward, and a stack of identical tickets makes a manual reviewer's job slower.

Do not accept help from anyone who contacts you offering to speed it up. Fast-tracked verification is a service that does not exist and a fraud pattern that very much does. No legitimate agent will initiate contact, ask for your credentials, or request remote access to your device. If you have any doubt, the official channels page shows how to reach real support.

We deliberately do not publish an expected processing time here. We have no verified current service level, and a made-up figure would only tell you that something normal is going wrong.

Which entity is verifying you

If you are in the European Economic Area, your counterparty is Bybit EU GmbH, authorised in Austria as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCAR. It is a distinct company with its own onboarding requirements and its own document rules. Guides written for the global platform will not always match what you are shown. Availability by country explains how to work out which entity applies to you.

Verification and where you live

Your documents should reflect where you actually reside. Verifying with documents from one country while accessing the platform from a country it does not serve creates exactly the conflict that freezes accounts during a later review. This is worth being direct about: it is not a technicality that gets waived, and the moment it surfaces is usually the moment you try to withdraw a meaningful amount.

Privacy, realistically

You are handing identity documents to a company. That is unavoidable if you want a regulated venue, and it is a genuine reason to prefer fewer accounts over many. Complete verification on the platforms you actually intend to use, rather than scattering copies of your passport across a dozen sites you signed up to for a promotion.

After verification

Once verified, the account can be funded. Start with how deposits work — particularly the network-selection section, which prevents the most expensive routine mistake in crypto — and read how to judge safety before you decide how much to move.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an exchange need my identity documents at all?
Anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing rules require regulated financial businesses to know who their customers are. It is a legal obligation on the company, not a preference, and platforms that ignore it tend to be shut down.
What is usually requested?
A government-issued identity document, a live selfie or short video to prove the document belongs to you, and often a proof of address. Higher tiers or specific products can require more, including source-of-funds information.
Why was my verification rejected?
The most common causes are a glare or a cropped edge on the document photo, a name that does not match the account exactly, an expired document, or an address proof that is too old or shows a different address than the one entered.
How long does it take?
Automated checks can complete quickly; anything routed to manual review takes longer, and volumes vary. We do not publish a specific time because we cannot verify a current service level, and an invented number would just set you up for disappointment.
Can I trade without verifying?
Limited use may be possible, but funding, most products and withdrawals depend on verification. Planning to avoid it is planning to have a balance you cannot move.
